Fundamentals of Ecological Engineering (CIVL 4045)

Course Code: CVIL 4045
Course Date: June 26, 2022 to July 5, 2022
Course Instructor: Satinder Brar

Course Description

Introduction to Ecological Engineering will bring forward the concept of technological means for ecosystem management, drawn from ecological understanding, in order to minimize the environmental impacts. The students will learn to use the tool boxes of nature, such as ecosystems, communities, organisms and their immediate abiotic environment. Hence, a solution requiring fewer resources always will be a more ecologically sound solution. H. T. Odum, the father of ecological engineering defined it as the ''environmental manipulation by man using small amounts of supplementary energy to control systems in which the main energy drives are coming from natural sources.'' The students will learn through potential application, such as constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment; environmental remediation; landscape architecture; urban planning; and urban horticulture applications. This course combining theory and experiential learning will advance the quest for a better understanding of the interface between humanity and nature.
